What is an Electronic Gearshift For?
Discovering the feel of gear changes without pulling the clutch. Much more than just a trivial convenience. An accessory (blipper) that changes your life
The gesture you repeat thousands of times without ever thinking about it.
Every motorcycle ride is made up of hundreds of gear shifts. Every weekend on the track, thousands. It is probably the most repeated action of all while riding, yet it is also the one we think about the least, because we take it for granted: you pull the clutch, change gear, release. An automatic action. And it is precisely in this invisibility that the problem lies which quickshifters were created to solve.
The problem isn't changing gear but doing it without causing damage
Every time you act on the clutch, for a fraction of a second you interrupt the flow of power between the engine and the rear wheel. At that exact moment, the load on the rear tyre changes abruptly and the motorcycle's geometry undergoes a micro-variation. On a straight it is irrelevant, but right in the middle of cornering or during a heavy downshift, that micro-interruption can be the difference between a clean line and a moment of instability.
💡 The key concept: Removing this cut doesn't just mean "riding in a more sporty way". It means removing an element of unpredictability when the motorcycle is already at the limit of its capabilities, turning the quickshifter into a risk-management tool, as well as a performance one.
What a quickshifter (upshift) really does
An electronic quickshifter for upshifts is designed to allow gear changes without pulling the clutch and without closing the throttle. The system detects the rider's intention via a sensor on the selector and, for a very brief window of time (often less than 50 milliseconds), interrupts the engine power delivery. The result is a gear change that does not break the flow of acceleration and does not require the rider to manage one less hand on the controls at the most delicate moment.
What a blipper (auto-blip) actually does
The blipper works on the opposite and more delicate problem: downshifting when approaching a corner. Downshifting without correctly managing the engine revs creates a sharp engine braking effect. The blipper automatically intervenes on the throttle, giving a short electronic "blip" of gas (the classic "heel-and-toe" downshift) to bring the engine speed back to the correct value before the clutch is released. This is an action that the system performs systematically and identically on every gear change, with no margin for error.
A benefit that can be felt even at low speed
Anyone who has tried a well-calibrated electronic quickshifter almost always reports the same feeling: it is not so much about "being faster", as feeling the motorcycle is smoother, more consistent, and less prone to minor jolts. It is a benefit that is felt just as much on the track as on an everyday ride, because the problem it solves exists at every speed, not just at the limits of performance.
